Pavement Maintenance
In response to questions regarding the City’s annual pavement maintenance processes, we hope the following background information will be helpful.
Draper City has implemented a pavement maintenance plan to increase the service life of our existing roadways. Each year, a team of inspectors will inspect every road in Draper that has not been serviced in the prior five years. The team will observe the extent and type of damage to each road to determine what treatment will help to extend the life of the road and when the treatment should be applied.
Slurry seals are the primary treatment option for most roads. A slurry seal is a resurfacing method that protects the street's surface from deterioration. The seal prevents infiltration of water and protects the asphalt from hardening by the sun. Slurry seals also add a new wear surface which improves skid resistance. Before the slurry seal application, the cracks are filled with a crack seal. For roads that are severely cracked, a scrub seal may be applied before the slurry seal application.
Sometimes after a treatment has been applied, we will hear from residents who are concerned about the work appearing messy or unfinished. This is normal after the initial application as it requires time for the slurry to cure. It may take a couple of months for a slurry seal to smooth out and look “normal,” after the initial application. After a scrub seal application, the contractor will return and sweep the gravel from the road within a day or two.
The following video provides a helpful overview of the slurry seal process. Please note that the contractor featured in the video is not the contractor used by Draper City.
We hope this provides a better understanding of the City’s annual pavement maintenance processes. If you have any questions, please contact Reed Reimschussel at (801) 576-6536.
