[ARCHIVED] Investigative Update

Sergeant Derek Johnson

DRAPER, Utah.

Just before 6:00 a.m. this morning an unintelligible radio communication was made by Sergeant Derek Johnson. Shortly after the radio communications several calls were made by citizens reporting shots fired in the area of 13800 S. Fort Street. When officers arrived they found Sergeant Johnson, an adult male and female all with gunshot wounds.

Initially, a section of the City of Draper was contained while a search was underway for a possible suspect in the immediate area. Police initiated a reverse 911 to inform residents of the police action and to stay in their homes for their safety. Through the investigation we have learned and believe that the adult male and/or adult female are responsible for the shooting. We do not believe that there are any outstanding suspects. We have released the containment area with the exception of Fort Street between Walden Lane and 13300 S. The area is a crime scene and detectives are still processing it for evidence. Any residents who need to leave the area can either inform an officer on scene or call 801-840-4000 to be escorted in or out.

The adult male and female are at area hospitals in critical condition.

We have received assistance from multiple police agencies in the Salt Lake Valley who have been helping with the investigation. The Unified Police Department is handling the criminal investigation in this case. This investigation is still active and as new information becomes available it will be released.
