‘Tis the season for holiday festivities – which often means beautiful decorations to enhance the spirit of the season. However, some of these decorations can be harmful to our four-legged family members.
We at Draper Animal Services ask you to be cautious when decorating your home for the holidays.
Here are a few tips:
- Fragile hanging ornaments are very tempting to playful cats passing by the tree (what cat can resist swatting it as they pass by?).
- The round ornaments are very exciting to both dogs and cats (they think they are balls for them to play with). They break very easily and can hurt mouths and paws.
- Candy decorations should be kept out of reach from pets. Sugar is toxic to them and candy will make them very sick--sometimes even to the point of being life-threatening.
- And let’s not forget the Christmas tree! Both dogs and cats think it is very thoughtful of us to bring a tree into the home for them to climb, chew, knock over and even urinate on it as they do outside. Keep a close eye on your tree and maybe even put it in an area where your pet is not allowed.
- Watch out for the extra electrical cords they can cause a "HAIR-RAISING "experience if chewed on.
- As always, please limit treats and people food. Remember that our pets get very excited when company comes to visit, so we need to make sure they get plenty of "R and R." We recommend having a safe, quiet place just for them.
Wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday season.
