Hazardous waste may be hiding in your home. You don’t have to look far to find products that can quickly become household hazardous waste. Common potential hazardous waste include poisons, corrosives, toxins and flammables such as the following:
Fuels, paint, pesticides, yard care chemicals, many cleaning supplies, batteries, cooking oil, automotive fluids and products, aerosols, fluorescent light bulbs, devices that contain mercury, televisions/monitors, computers and peripherals, and cell phones.
Hazardous waste can cause house fires and accidental poisonings. If this waste is stored or disposed of improperly, it may seep into our environment and poison our land, air and water. Please protect your home and our environment by properly disposing of your hazardous waste at the below drop-off locations.

The following information is for residential waste only, not business waste. Explosives, fireworks, radioactive materials and tires are not accepted. Please note that the container with hazardous waste (e.g. a container of gas) will need to be left at the landfill .

Fluorescent Lights Drop-Off Location
Several Salt Lake County Library locations provide safe disposal of fluorescent light bulbs (compact and up to a max of 4 feet long): Bingham Creek, Granite, Hunter, Magna, Sandy, South Jordan, Tyler, West Jordan, Whitmore. This program is for individuals/residences only. For commercial disposal, please call the Salt Lake County Landfill at 801-541-4078 to set up an appointment.
Home Depot accepts compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s) as long as they are intact and undamaged. There is a recycling center with bins, usually near the entrance, that accepts CFL bulbs, plastic bags and rechargeable batteries.
Animal Carcasses
It is illegal to dispose of any animal carcass in the curbside garbage container. The Trans-Jordan Landfill will not accept any animal carcass. Contact Draper City Animal Services at (801) 576-1805 for assistance.
